Whilst the Ceramics Market has firmly established itself within the international ceramics community, we believe that the future of the craft lies in nurturing talent and embracing innovation.
That is why this year we are inviting five young, promising ceramicists to take part in the market. Each has been nominated by one of five internationally acclaimed ceramicists who will act as their mentor. The New Generation
Project is made possible in part by Rohde, the renowned manufacturer of ceramic kilns. Thanks to their generous support, we are able to bring this project to life.

Experimentation is what moves me. I started collecting clay as a game, and got hooked to it. The research for clays that fits my criteria of resistance to high temperatures, workability and beauty is not easy, but extremely rewarding: it allows me to work with unique materials, with their pro and cons, and I try to exalt those intrinsic characteristics.

Julia van Eijden
Julia is an artist and potter based in Enschede. Since 2021 she has been working at AKI ArtEZ in the ceramics workshop – first as an assistant, and now as a technical instructor. There she teaches students from Fine Art, Crossmedia Design and Moving Image in practical skills such as hand-building, throwing, mould-making and glazing; everything there is to know about clay.
Since 2023, Julia has also been part of the teaching team at Carina Claassens Ceramic Centre in Haarlo.

Oliver Neu
Oliver Neu’s animal sculptures, created from porcelain and building clay, have an equally naturalistic and alienated-abstract effect. The broken surfaces and fragmentary body constructions – reminiscent of surreal fantasy creatures – come together in the eye of the beholder to form an exciting, contradictory image.

Apart from being awarded the Master Prize by the Bavarian State Government and other accolades, a pivotal moment for me was a journey to Japan. There I had the privilege of apprenticing under three masters. From renowned ceramicist Yoshihiro Shimada I learned intricate traditional Japanese techniques like sometsuke. The pinnacle of the experience was participating in a 24-hour wood firing.

Lucy Baxendale
A ceramicist and illustrator based in Herefordshire. Her work begins as drawing and develops into porcelain sculptures—like 3D sketches in which lines become stories. She explores how a line transforms once it becomes tangible, and how form and imagination come together in that process.
Her work is unglazed, pure, and playful, with a slightly surreal quality that continues to intrigue.

Q&A at the Market
During the market, the young makers and their mentors will give short presentations about their work, inspiration and creative process. A unique opportunity to get acquainted with the future of ceramics.
In addition, live demonstrations by Xiaolin will take place every day. The Chinese ceramicist Xiaolin will take you through the building of a Minigama kiln – a compact ceramic kiln that reaches 1,300 degrees in just a few hours. The firing process uses charcoal, and the resulting ash creates a remarkable glaze on the work.
The presentations will take place on the small field at the following times:
Sunday, 24 May:
- 11:00 – 11:30: Oliver Neu in conversation with Job Heykamp
- 12:00 – 12:30: Lucy Baxendale in conversation with Simon Griffiths
- 13:00 – 13:30: Live demonstration Xiaolin – watch the Minigama kiln come to life
- 14:00 – 14:30: Julia van Eijden in conversation with Niek Hoogland
Monday, 25 May:
- 11:00 – 11:30: Jacopo Cucci in conversation with Terry Davies
- 12:00 – 12:30: Live demonstration Xiaolin – watch the Minigama kiln come to life
- 13:00 – 13:30: Annabel Kail in conversation with Peter Fröhlich
The Mentorship Programme
The five young ceramicists are guided by their mentors both in the run-up to the market and throughout the event itself.
This creates a remarkable meeting of generations, offering the public a unique glimpse into the creative process. During the Ceramics Market, each talent will present their work, inspiration and way of working together with their mentor.
